Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a petticoat and plain hoop?

Although theoretically a petticoat and hoop are defined differently, they both serve the same purpose. Both are worn as an undergarment in order to provide a specific shape for an outergarment. Petticoats have traditionally been known to have layers of tulle to maintain their shape, whilst hoops have a bell shape structure, and hold their shape without the additional tulle layers. This means that the wearer does not have any part of the hoop touching their legs, unlike a tulle only petticoat.

2. I don't know which petticoat to choose, what do I do?

There are several elements which make each petticoat unique to give you the perfect look.

Firstly, you need to decide on the circumference, or how wide you would like the petticoat to be. We have provided a "how to" section for choosing your petticoat, but should you have any problems, please feel free to email us a photo of your gown and we will be happy to recommend a petticoat or hoop for you.

Next, you need to consider the number of ruffles, tulle tiers and hoops, and where they are placed. A mermaid type dress for example, would require layers concentrated at the bottom of the petticoat, where as an A line gown may need 3-5 hoops with ruffles, depending on the type of dress and degree of fullness required. Of course, you may prefer a full tulle petticoat.

Thirdly, you need to consider the type of waistband required.  You can choose from a drawstring, velcro or a waistband with an elastic corsage which can often function as shapewear since it has a corset like effect around the waist to hip area.

Lastly, you need to decide on the color and length of the petticoat. Most petticoats come in a standard length, however there are a few styles which require you to choose the most appropriate length for you. Length is measured from the waist to the hem of your gown. The petticoat should be shorter than your gown.

If you require a particular length, please send us your request and we will see if we can accomodate your request. All special requests will incur a surcharge.

3. What if I order a petticoat, and it doesn't fit or is the wrong style for my dress?

If you receive your petticoat and find that it is the wrong size or style for your gown, you can email us for details on how to return the product for an exchange. Refunds or exchanges will not be accepted for change of mind.

4. Do your petticoats come in larger sizes?

Our petticoats are available in extra large sizes. If you require a special size, please contact us with your request. All special requests are subject to a surcharge.

5. Do you have a store where I can view the petticoats ?

No we don't have a Madame Petticoat store, we only sell on line.

Of course. Contact us for details. Upon receipt of your order and payment we will contact you to let you know that it has been received. If you do not hear from us within 3 days of sending the order, please send us an email to ensure that we have received it.

8. I'm having problems viewing the products and shopping cart - how can I place an order?

If you are having difficulty seeing the products or shopping cart you can send us the order form and payment as per question 7 above, or send us an email to place your order and we can provide you with direct deposit details or we can send you a paypal invoice if you prefer.

9. Can you make other speciality type petticoats - for example a hoop with a wider circumference, or overskirt?

Yes, we can, however as these would be custom made, delivery would be about 8-12 weeks. If you provide us with your specifications and details of the required fabric, we will organise a quote for you. Please note that quotes are still subject to fabric and materials availability.

10. I'm not sure which fabric would best suits my dress, can you advise me please?

Our petticoats are available in bridal tafetta and cotton blends. If the weight of your dress is fairly light, the bridal tafetta should suffice. If your dress has a lot of layers and is quite heavy, we suggest going for the cotton option as these petticoats are a little sturdier and will not collapse under the weight of the dress. Full tulle petticoats can be worn under all types of dresses.
